🐧 Atlantic Puffin – Skomer Island

One of the true highlights of any visit to Skomer Island is coming face-to-face with the charismatic Atlantic Puffin. Despite their colourful appearance, these remarkable seabirds are perfectly adapted to life at sea, spending much of the year far out in the Atlantic before returning to the Welsh coast to breed.

This individual paused just long enough to make eye contact, offering a wonderful opportunity to capture the character and charm that has earned puffins the nickname "Clowns of the Sea."

🚁 Westland Lynx AH.7 | EGBO Summer Fly-In – Day 3

One of the highlights of Day 3 at the EGBO Summer Fly-In was the arrival of the iconic Westland Lynx AH.7 (XZ179). Even decades after its introduction, the Lynx remains one of the most recognisable military helicopters ever built, with its distinctive rotor sound and incredible agility making it a favourite wherever it appears.

This sequence captures every stage of the visit—from the low approach and high-speed passes to the crew’s friendly wave before a smooth landing at Halfpenny Green. It’s always a privilege to photograph aircraft that have served with distinction and continue to inspire aviation enthusiasts.

The Westland Lynx made history in 1986 when a specially modified example set the world helicopter speed record of 249.09 mph (400.87 km/h)—a record that still stands today for a conventional helicopter.

A brilliant finale to another fantastic day of aviation, great weather, and excellent company at EGBO.

🚁 EGBO Summer Fly-In 2026 | Day 3

The unmistakable sound of rotor blades filled the air as this beautifully presented Aérospatiale SA341 Gazelle of the French Army (Armée de Terre) arrived at Halfpenny Green Airport for the final day of the EGBO Summer Fly-In.

Originally developed in the late 1960s, the Gazelle became one of the world’s most advanced light helicopters of its era. Its streamlined design, fenestron enclosed tail rotor, and remarkable agility made it a favourite for reconnaissance, liaison, and light attack roles across numerous armed forces.

These images capture every stage of its visit—from a graceful arrival and dynamic low passes to the gentle touchdown at Halfpenny Green. The striking camouflage scheme and vibrant high-visibility markings stood out beautifully against the Staffordshire summer skies.

A fantastic addition to another brilliant day of aviation at EGBO, and a real pleasure to photograph.

☀️ A Fantastic Day at the Halfpenny Green Summer Fly-In! ✈️

There's something special about a relaxed fly-in where classic aircraft, modern trainers and vintage taildraggers all share the same runway. Today's Halfpenny Green Summer Fly-In delivered exactly that, with a wonderful mix of aviation history and general aviation taking to the skies throughout the day.

From the graceful Pitts Special and the unmistakable Fokker-inspired biplanes, to RAF training aircraft, the beautifully restored Yakovlev Yak-52, and a colourful collection of light aircraft, there was no shortage of photographic opportunities. Watching these aircraft arrive and depart against the summer sky made for a fantastic day behind the camera.

🚜 Fordson Major Diesel | A Classic Workhorse

Sometimes it's the details that tell the story.

The Fordson Major Diesel is more than just a tractor—it's a symbol of post-war British farming and engineering. Introduced in the 1950s, these dependable machines helped transform agriculture, earning a reputation for reliability and rugged simplicity that has stood the test of time.

For these images, I wanted to focus on the character of the machine rather than the whole tractor. The worn metalwork, exposed engine components, and iconic Fordson Major Diesel badge showcase decades of hard work and careful preservation. It's a reminder that true classics don't need to shine—they wear their history with pride.

✈️ Twin Engines. Twin Booms. Timeless Design.

The North American Rockwell OV-10 Bronco is one of aviation's most distinctive military aircraft. Originally designed for observation, forward air control and light attack missions, its rugged construction, excellent visibility and remarkable short take-off and landing capabilities made it invaluable in demanding environments.

Captured in a steep banking turn, this image highlights the Bronco's unmistakable twin-boom design, spinning propellers and colourful high-visibility markings—showcasing both its elegance and agility in the air.

Photographing propeller-driven aircraft is always a balance between sharpness and motion. For this shot, a shutter speed of 1/200 second allowed the propellers to blur naturally while keeping the aircraft itself crisp, conveying the sense of speed and flight that a frozen propeller simply can't match.

✈️ Behind the Flight Deck – The Engineer's Office on Concorde

Hidden behind the pilots' seats was one of the most important workstations on Concorde—the Flight Engineer's panel. Packed with hundreds of switches, gauges and indicators, this was where the aircraft's complex systems were constantly monitored throughout every stage of flight.

From fuel management and engine performance to electrical, hydraulic and environmental systems, the Flight Engineer played a vital role in ensuring Concorde operated safely and efficiently. During supersonic flight at over Mach 2, precision and constant monitoring were essential, making this panel one of the busiest places on the aircraft.

This image captures the atmosphere inside Concorde G-BOAF, where the dim cockpit lighting hints at the countless hours spent preparing for departures, crossing the Atlantic at twice the speed of sound, and bringing passengers safely home.

Sometimes it's the details hidden in the shadows that tell the greatest stories.

🚕 When Every Journey Started with a Simple Sign… "FOR HIRE."

Long before ride-sharing apps and GPS navigation, the iconic Austin taxi was a familiar sight on Britain's streets. Built for reliability, comfort and character, these vehicles became part of everyday life, carrying millions of passengers and helping shape the image of the traditional British cab.

These close-up images capture the beautifully preserved details that are so often overlooked—the classic "FOR HIRE" indicator, the original Argo taximeter, and the unmistakable Austin bonnet mascot. Every worn edge and polished surface tells a story of decades spent transporting people through towns and cities across the UK.

Photographing classic vehicles isn't just about the whole car—sometimes it's the craftsmanship and the finer details that preserve history.

✈️ Across an Ocean. Into History.

On 14–15 June 1919, two men proved that the impossible was possible.

Captain John Alcock and Lieutenant Arthur Whitten Brown climbed aboard a modified Vickers Vimy IV, lifted off from St. John’s, Newfoundland, and set their course across the unforgiving North Atlantic.

For 15 hours and 57 minutes, they battled fog, freezing temperatures, instrument failures and exhaustion before crash-landing safely in Clifden, Ireland.

Their achievement wasn’t just another record—it changed aviation forever.

One of the real highlights of the Midlands Air Festival is the spectacular mass ascent of the hot air balloons. From fun character balloons to vibrant special shapes and classic envelopes, every launch is unique and offers endless photographic opportunities.

These images were captured over the 29–31 May 2026 festival, where the early morning calm and evening golden light created the perfect conditions for both flying and photography. Watching dozens of balloons drift silently across the Warwickshire sky is something that never loses its magic.

Whether it's the towering scarecrow, the playful turtle, the striking orange slice, or simply the joy of seeing families capturing the moment on their phones, each balloon tells its own story and brings colour to the sky.

🐧 The Catch of the Day

One of the most rewarding moments to witness on Skomer Island is seeing a puffin return from the sea with a beak packed full of sandeels.

Their specially adapted beaks and rough tongue allow them to carry multiple fish at once while continuing to catch more—an incredible evolutionary advantage during the breeding season. Every successful fishing trip means another meal for a hungry chick waiting safely underground.

It's a reminder that behind every beautiful wildlife photograph is a remarkable story of survival, dedication, and instinct.

Standing proudly above the water, the Old Tenby Lifeboat Station is a reminder of the courage and dedication of the volunteer crews who launched into some of the most challenging conditions to save lives at sea.

I chose to present this image in black and white to emphasise the history, character, and timeless nature of this iconic landmark. Stripping away the colour allows the textures, light, and architectural details to tell the story of a building that has witnessed generations of maritime history.

Photography isn’t always about vibrant colours—sometimes monochrome says so much more.

Bewdley Mini Photo Marathon – Four Themes, One Town

The challenge of a photo marathon is seeing familiar places differently, and Bewdley certainly delivered.

For Framed Image, I used the foreground railings to draw attention to one of the town's beautiful timber-framed buildings, creating depth and guiding the viewer into the scene.

The theme of Wabi Sabi led me to a weathered pedestrian crossing button—its peeling paint and worn metal a perfect reminder that beauty can be found in imperfection and the passage of time.

For Only in Bewdley, there could be few more fitting subjects than the statue of Stanley Baldwin, the town's most famous resident and three-time Prime Minister, standing proudly in the heart of the town.

Finally, Beside the River took me to the River Severn, where a lone swan drifted through shimmering golden reflections, providing a peaceful end to a day spent exploring with a camera.

A fantastic challenge that encouraged slowing down, looking closer, and finding stories in places that many people pass by every day.

One of the highlights of my recent visit to Skomer Island was witnessing this intimate moment between two Atlantic Puffins. Whether it’s part of their courtship ritual or pair bonding, these gentle interactions are a reminder of just how remarkable wildlife can be when you’re patient enough to observe.

Skomer is truly a photographer’s paradise, offering incredible opportunities to capture these charismatic seabirds in their natural habitat. Seeing them at such close range is an experience I’ll never forget.

The Shake-Off

One of my favourite things about wildlife photography is capturing behaviour rather than simply a portrait. This duck spent a few moments bathing before rising from the water and performing a full wing-stretch and shake, sending droplets flying in every direction.

What lasts only a second in real life can reveal incredible detail when frozen through the lens – from the iridescent green feathers catching the light to the striking blue wing patches hidden beneath the plumage.
Sometimes the most rewarding wildlife moments aren't the rare sightings, but the everyday behaviours that often go unnoticed.

Golden Reflections

Gliding effortlessly through a canvas of liquid gold, this swan seemed completely at home in the fading light. As the evening sun dipped lower, the water transformed into a mosaic of shimmering reflections, creating a scene that felt both peaceful and timeless.

The simplicity of the composition allows the elegant shape of the swan to stand out against the textured surface of the river, while its reflection stretches beneath it like a brushstroke on a painted canvas. It's a reminder that some of nature's most beautiful moments happen quietly, without fanfare, if we're willing to pause and observe.

Most people walk past these every day without a second thought.

Weathered by years of rain, sun, and countless button presses, this pedestrian crossing box has become a quiet witness to daily life. The peeling paint, worn metal, and faded instructions tell a story of thousands of journeys—commuters heading to work, children walking to school, and visitors exploring the town.

What caught my eye wasn't the crossing itself, but the character hidden within something so ordinary. The textures, signs of age, and simple message of "wait" create an image that feels surprisingly reflective in a world that rarely slows down.

Sometimes photography isn't about finding something extraordinary—it's about seeing the extraordinary in something everyone else overlooks.

Firefighting From the Sky

A dramatic moment captured as the Grumman Turbo Firecat releases a huge plume of water over the display area at the Midlands Air Festival.

Originally developed from the legendary Grumman S-2 Tracker, the Firecat has been transformed into a highly capable aerial firefighting aircraft. Equipped with a large water tank and powerful turboprop engines, it can rapidly respond to wildfires, delivering thousands of litres of water or fire retardant precisely where it's needed most.

This image freezes the split second after the drop, revealing the incredible shape and texture of the water cloud as it explodes beneath the aircraft. Moments like this highlight both the power of aerial firefighting and the skill of the crews who operate these specialised aircraft around the world.

🚂 The Masterpiece – A Journey Back in Time 🚂

Stepping back into the golden age of steam with the magnificent Burrell 8hp Showman’s Engine “The Masterpiece”. Originally built in 1898, this beautifully restored engine once travelled the country powering fairground attractions and illuminating the famous “Electric Leaping Horses.”

The craftsmanship is simply breathtaking – from the polished brass and intricate paintwork to the towering chimney standing proudly against the dramatic skies. It’s easy to see why these machines were once considered engineering marvels, combining power, elegance, and artistry in one remarkable package.

A fantastic opportunity to photograph a living piece of history and appreciate the dedication of those who preserve these incredible machines for future generations.
